Can a sofa go in a skip?

Sometimes, but not always, and rarely at a sensible price for one item. Skip companies now treat upholstered seating as a separate waste stream, and a single sofa is a poor reason to hire a skip at all.

Key points

  • Many skip companies restrict upholstered seating or charge extra for it because of POPs rules.
  • Where a sofa is allowed, it usually has to be kept separate from everything else in the skip.
  • A skip parked on the road needs a council permit, which adds cost and lead time to the hire.
  • For a single sofa, a skip is poor value next to a collection, a bulky waste booking or a trip to the tip.
  • A licensed collection takes the sofa out of the room for one fixed price agreed from a photo.

Can a sofa go in a skip? The short answer

Can a sofa go in a skip? Sometimes, but you have to ask the skip company first, and the answer has been changing. Some firms will not accept sofas, armchairs or any other upholstered seating at all. Others accept them but charge a surcharge per item, or ask you to put the seating on top so it can be lifted off separately when the skip is emptied.

The reason is not awkwardness on the part of the skip firm. It comes down to how upholstered furniture now has to be handled once it leaves your house, and that rule applies whether the sofa goes in a skip, to the tip or onto a waste carrier's van. The difference is who deals with it and what they charge you for doing so.

So before you book a skip on the assumption that the sofa will go in with everything else, read the terms, ask the question directly and get the answer in writing. A skip that arrives with a no-sofa rule attached leaves you exactly where you started, with a sofa in the room and a skip on the drive.

Why skip companies treat sofas differently

Upholstered soft furnishings may contain persistent organic pollutants, usually shortened to POPs. Because of that, many councils, tips and waste firms keep upholstered seating separate from general waste. It must not be landfilled or broken up for recycling in the normal way, and instead it is sent for incineration with energy recovery at a permitted facility.

A mixed skip is normally tipped at a transfer station and sorted. If a sofa is buried in the load, it has to be picked out and routed separately, which costs the skip company time and money. That is why some refuse seating outright and others only take it if it is declared, kept on top and paid for as an extra.

If you load a sofa without telling the firm, do not expect it to slip through. Loads are checked when they are tipped, and an undeclared sofa can mean an added charge after the event or a refusal to collect the skip until it is removed.

Why a skip is poor value for a single sofa

A skip is priced for the whole container and the days it sits outside your house, not for what you put in it. Hire one for a lone sofa and you are paying for a large volume of empty space, the delivery, the collection and any surcharge for the seating itself. Most of what you have bought goes unused.

There is also the lifting. The skip company drops the container on the drive and leaves. Getting the sofa out of the lounge, through the door and over the side of the skip is your job, and a sofa that will not fit through the doorway as it stands has to be tilted, stripped or dismantled first. None of that comes with the hire.

Add the wait for a delivery slot and the fact that the sofa still needs to go on top of any other waste, and the case for a skip gets thin quickly. It only starts to make sense when the sofa is one small part of a much bigger clear-out.

Permits, placement and where a skip can sit

If the skip goes on your own drive or front garden, no permit is needed. If it has to sit on the road or pavement, the council has to issue a skip permit first, and the skip company will normally arrange that and pass the fee on. Permits take time to come through and run for a set period, so a road-side skip cannot usually arrive the same day.

A skip on the road also needs to be lit and marked in line with the permit conditions, and in some streets it simply is not allowed. For a terraced house with no drive, that permit question alone can rule the skip out before you get as far as asking about the sofa.

Better options for one sofa

Councils generally offer a bulky waste collection. You book in advance, wait for the date you are given and leave the sofa outside on the day. It is a sound option for a ground floor room with a clear route to the kerb, provided you have help to carry it. The tip works too if you have a vehicle that can take a sofa and you check whether your site needs a booking.

If the sofa is in good condition and still has its fire safety label, a furniture charity may collect it. If it is not, a licensed waste carrier can take it. Our crew of two carries the sofa out from wherever it is, including upstairs and from flats, loads it and takes it to a licensed waste transfer station. You send a photo by email, get a fixed price and pay once it is in the van. The same applies to a corner sofa that is too big for a skip or a sofa bed with a heavy frame.

The other thing to weigh up is the lead time. A skip has to be delivered, filled and collected. A sofa collection is one visit, and we offer same-day or next-day collection wherever possible. There is a fuller rundown of every route in our guide on how to get rid of a sofa.

When a skip does make sense, and what to do with the sofa then

If you are clearing a whole house, stripping out a kitchen or doing building work, a skip earns its keep because it absorbs a large mixed load over several days. Even then, the sofa does not have to go in it. Keeping the seating out of the skip avoids the surcharge, saves skip space for the heavy mixed waste and removes the risk of a refused load.

The simplest split is to let the skip take the general waste and book a separate sofa collection for the seating. Before you pay anyone to take a sofa, ask for their waste carrier licence number and check it on the public register. In the UK, fly-tipping is a criminal offence, and the householder can be held responsible if a sofa they paid to have removed is dumped. Our upper tier licence is CBDU526130, and we can tell you where the sofa went and provide a waste transfer note if you ask.

Questions people ask

Will the skip company tell me if sofas are not allowed?

Most publish a list of restricted items, but it is easy to miss. Ask directly when you book whether upholstered seating is accepted, whether there is a surcharge and whether it has to be kept separate, and keep the answer in writing.

Can I hide a sofa under other waste in a skip?

It is not worth trying. Skip loads are checked when they are tipped, and an undeclared sofa can lead to an extra charge after the event or a refused collection. Declare it, or keep it out of the skip and have it collected separately.

Do I need a permit for a skip on my own drive?

No. Permits are only needed when a skip sits on a public road or pavement. On private land, such as a drive or front garden, no permit is required, though the skip still has to be reached by the lorry that drops it.

Is it quicker to hire a skip or book a sofa collection?

A collection is usually quicker. A skip needs a delivery slot, time to fill it and a collection slot, and a road-side skip needs a permit too. We offer same-day or next-day collection wherever possible, with the sofa carried out for you in one visit.
