What affects sofa removal cost
Two sofas that look alike can be very different jobs. Here are the six things that decide what a sofa removal costs, and why a photo is enough for us to give you one fixed figure.
Key points
- The size of the sofa and the number of items you want gone are the starting point for any quote.
- Access matters: the floor the sofa is on, whether there is a lift, the stairs and where the van can park.
- A sofa that has to be dismantled to leave the room takes longer than one that can be carried out whole.
- Distance for the van and the disposal route for upholstered seating are built into the price, not added later.
- Timing affects which slots are available, and a photo lets us quote one fixed price before anyone arrives.

What affects sofa removal cost: the sofa itself
The biggest single factor in sofa removal cost is what you are asking to have taken away. A single armchair is one lift for two people and a small space in the van. A corner sofa in several sections, or a three seater with a matching two seater and a footstool, is a longer job that fills more of the load. The more there is, the more crew time and van space it uses.
Weight and construction matter as much as size. A metal-framed sofa bed or an electric recliner with motors in the base is far heavier than a light fabric two seater of the same footprint, and it is handled differently on stairs and in the van. The photo shows us all of this, which is why we ask for one rather than a description.
If you have more than one item, put them all in the same photo or send several. One visit for three pieces is a different job from three separate collections, and the price reflects that.
Access: floor, lift, stairs and parking
Where the sofa sits in the property changes how long the crew spends on site. A ground floor room with a straight run to the front door is the quickest kind of job. An upstairs bedroom, a top floor flat with no lift or a basement with a narrow stair all take more time and more care, and time is part of what any quote covers.
A working lift that the sofa fits into makes a big difference in a block of flats, so tell us whether there is one and roughly how big it is. Parking matters too. If the van can stop at the door, the carry is short. If the nearest place to park is a street away, or the block has a barrier, the crew carries the sofa further, and that is time as well.
We do not need you to work any of this out. Mention the floor, the lift and the parking in your email and we will allow for it in the fixed price we send back, so there is nothing to add when the crew sees the route on the day.

Email a picture of the sofa with the floor it is on and whether there is a lift. We reply with one figure that covers the whole job and does not change on the day.
Whether the sofa needs dismantling
Some sofas leave the room in one piece. Others were assembled inside it and will not go back through the door until they are taken apart. Removing legs and cushions is quick. Unbolting the sections of a modular sofa or lifting the mechanism out of a sofa bed takes longer. Cutting a glued and stapled frame into pieces inside a flat takes longer still, and it needs tools, dust sheets and somewhere to stack the parts.
Dismantling is crew time, so it is a factor in the cost. It is also something we can usually see coming from a photo of the sofa and a line about the doorway, which is why the price we quote already includes it when it is going to be needed. If you are not sure whether yours will fit out, read how to get a sofa out of a flat and then send us the picture anyway.
How far the van has to travel
Every collection involves a van driving to you, then to a licensed waste transfer station, then on to the next job. Fuel and driving time are part of the cost of any removal, and the further your property is from the rest of the day's route and from the facility, the more of both a job uses.
This is one of the reasons the same sofa does not carry an identical price everywhere, and why we quote each job individually rather than from a fixed list. It is also why a flexible date can help. If we can collect your sofa on a day when the van is already working nearby, the travel is shared across several jobs rather than carried by one.
Disposal costs for upholstered seating
Taking a sofa away is only part of the work. It then has to be disposed of, and that is not free for the carrier. Licensed waste transfer stations charge to accept waste, and upholstered seating is handled as its own stream because it may contain persistent organic pollutants, known as POPs. It must be kept apart from general waste and sent for incineration with energy recovery at a permitted facility rather than landfilled or shredded for ordinary recycling.
That disposal is built into the fixed price we give you. It is also the part of the job a carrier who quotes a suspiciously low figure may be planning to skip. In the UK, fly-tipping is a criminal offence, and the householder can be held responsible when waste they paid to have removed is dumped. Ask for a waste carrier licence number before you book anyone. Ours is CBDU526130, and we can provide a waste transfer note on request and tell you where the sofa went. Our guide on what happens to your sofa after collection covers the full route.
Timing and how it shapes the job
When you need the sofa gone affects how the job is planned. We offer same-day or next-day collection wherever possible, and a photo sent in the morning gives the best chance of a slot that day. A sofa that has to go at a specific hour on a specific day is a narrower request than one that can be collected any time this week, and narrower requests are harder to fit around the rest of the route.
None of this means you have to compromise. Tell us what you need and we will tell you what we can do. If the date is fixed because a new sofa is arriving or a tenancy is ending, say so and we will plan around it.
Why a photo is enough for one fixed price
Everything above is visible from a good photo and a short note. The picture shows the type of sofa, its size and condition and how many items there are. The note tells us the floor, the lift, the parking and when you want it gone. With that we work out crew time, van space, dismantling, travel and disposal, and reply with a single figure for the whole job.
That figure is fixed. It is what you pay once the sofa is loaded, and nothing is added on the day because the crew found stairs, a tight door or a heavier frame than expected. We have had 15 years and more than 500 jobs to learn what to look for in a photo. Send yours to hello@sofa-removal.co.uk or use the quote form on our sofa disposal page, and you will have your price before anyone sets foot in the property.
Questions people ask
Why do you need a photo rather than a description?
A photo shows size, construction, condition and how many items there are in one glance, which a description rarely does. With a line about the floor and the lift, it gives us everything we need to send a fixed price.
Will the price change when the crew sees the sofa?
No. The figure we send from your photo is what you pay once the sofa is loaded, and nothing is added on the day. Put the floor, the lift and the parking in your email so the quote is based on the real job from the start.
Is it worth sending several items at once?
Yes. One visit for a sofa, an armchair and a footstool uses one trip and one disposal run, so quote for everything together. Put all the items in the photo or send a picture of each.
Does the disposal of my sofa cost extra?
It is included. The fixed price covers carrying, loading, travel and licensed disposal of the upholstered seating, with a waste transfer note available on request. There is no separate disposal charge after the collection.
