Recliner sofa removal starts with a plug. An electric recliner sofa has a transformer and a cable running to a socket, and the crew unplugs it, unclips the transformer and takes both away with the sofa. Manual recliners have no cable but the same heavy steel mechanism under each seat. Either way, send us a photo by email, we reply with a fixed price, and two people with a van carry it out from wherever it is in the property.

Most recliner sofas split into sections. A three seat recliner is usually two or three separate seats clipped together along the base, and the crew separates them in the room so each piece goes through the door on its own. That is what makes a 3 seater recliner easier to get out of a flat than a solid sofa of the same length, even though it weighs more. If it is a corner sofa with reclining seats, say so and send a photo of the whole thing.

The weight is the problem, not the size. The reclining mechanism in each seat is a steel frame with a footrest that swings out, and in an electric model there is a motor on top of that. A single reclining seat can weigh as much as an ordinary two seater. Lifting it is not a one-person job and it is not a job for a car boot. Two people carry each section, which is the only way we work.

Sofa Removal is an upper tier waste carrier registered with the Environment Agency, licence CBDU526130, and we can tell you where the sofa went. A working recliner with its fire label can be passed on for reuse, and the rest is broken down at a licensed transfer station as our guide on what happens to your sofa after collection describes. For a recliner that is upstairs, read how to get a sofa out of a flat, then send the picture. A matching reclining armchair can go on the same email.

How a recliner sofa collection works

  1. Send a photo

Email a picture of the recliner sofa with every seat closed, and say whether it is manual or electric. The form on this page does the email for you.

  2. Get a fixed price

We send one figure that includes unplugging, splitting the sofa, carrying each section out and disposing of it all. It stays the same on the day.

  3. Book a slot

Tell us a day that works and we confirm it. Same-day or next-day collection is offered wherever possible, with early emails getting the first slots.

  4. Pay when it is loaded

The crew unplugs the sofa, separates the sections and carries them to the van. You pay the price you were sent once everything is on board.

Why people use us

The electrics are handled

You do not need to work out which cable goes where. The crew unplugs the sofa, removes the transformer and lead and takes them with it.

Licensed and insured

Upper tier waste carrier licence CBDU526130 is registered with the Environment Agency, backed by public liability cover of £5 million and employers' liability of £10 million.

Fifteen years of heavy sofas

With more than 15 years of experience and over 500 jobs done, the crew knows how recliner sections clip together and how they come apart. We are rated 5 stars on Google.

Steel and motors recycled

The reclining mechanisms and motors are separated for metal recycling at a licensed waste transfer station. 90% of everything we collect is recycled.

How a recliner sofa is taken apart and carried out

The crew starts at the wall. The sofa is unplugged, the transformer is unclipped from the frame or the floor and the cable is coiled and kept with it, so nothing electrical is left behind in the room. Each seat is then put in the fully closed position with the footrest down, because an open footrest doubles the depth of the sofa and swings out when the seat is tilted. On most recliner sofas the seats are joined by metal brackets along the base, and the crew lifts each seat up and away from its neighbour to separate them.

Each section is then carried by two people, mechanism side kept low so the weight stays under control on stairs. A single electric seat is heavy and the crew will not try to carry a whole three seat recliner in one piece if it splits. In the van the sections sit side by side so nothing crushes the mechanism of the piece underneath. Before we arrive, leave the socket reachable, close every seat if the motor still works and move any lamp or table that sits beside the sofa out of the way.

At the licensed waste transfer station the steel mechanisms, motors and transformers are separated for metal recycling and the timber, foam and leather or fabric are sorted into their own streams. Because upholstered sofas may contain persistent organic pollutants, they are kept away from general waste and sent for incineration with energy recovery at a permitted facility rather than to landfill. A recliner that still works, with its fire safety label intact, is passed on for reuse where possible.

Recliner sofa removal questions

Do I need to unplug the recliner sofa before you arrive?

You can if it is easy to reach, but you do not have to. The crew unplugs it, removes the transformer and cable and takes those away with the sofa. If the motor still works, closing every seat before we arrive saves a few minutes.

Will you split the recliner sofa into sections?

Yes, where it comes apart. Most recliner sofas are made of separate seats clipped together along the base, and the crew unclips them in the room so each section goes through the door on its own. There is no extra charge for this.

Is a recliner sofa heavier than a normal sofa?

Yes, and by a long way. Each reclining seat has a steel mechanism and swinging footrest built in, and electric models add a motor on top. That is why two people carry every section and why we ask you to say in the email that it is a recliner.

One of the seats is stuck in the reclined position. Is that a problem?

Send a photo showing the stuck seat and we will tell you how we will handle it. The crew can carry a seat that will not close, but it needs a different grip and more room on the route, so we would rather know first.

What happens to the motor and transformer?

They go to the licensed waste transfer station with the rest of the sofa, where the motors, transformers and steel mechanisms are separated for metal recycling. We can give you a waste transfer note that covers the whole sofa.

Can you take a recliner sofa out of an upstairs flat?

Yes. Splitting it into sections is what makes this possible, as each seat is shorter than the whole sofa and turns corners on the stairs more easily. Email a photo and tell us the floor and whether there is a lift.
