Footstool removal is usually part of a bigger job, and we treat it that way. Most footstools, pouffes and ottomans leave the house on the same day as the sofa they matched, so the simplest thing is to put the footstool in the photo with the sofa and let one price cover both. If the footstool is all that is going, that is fine too. Send a picture by email, get a fixed price and two people collect it from the room it is in.

The pieces on this page look small but they are not all light. A plain pouffe is foam and fabric and one person could carry it. A storage footstool has a timber box, a hinged lid and a weight of its own even when empty, and a large ottoman can be as wide as a 2 seater sofa is long. Whatever you have, the same two-person crew and van come to the door, and the price is set from the photo before anyone arrives.

A footstool is easy to put off. It sits in a corner after the sofa has gone and ends up in the garage, where it stays. Our guide on how to get rid of a sofa covers the options for soft furniture generally, and the one on whether a sofa can go in a skip explains why upholstered items are often kept apart from mixed waste. In practice the quickest route is an email with a photo and a collection on the earliest day we can offer.

Our waste carrier licence is upper tier, number CBDU526130, registered with the Environment Agency. A footstool in good condition with its fire safety label still attached can be passed on for reuse, and anything else is broken down at a licensed waste transfer station. If you want to know where it went, ask and we will tell you. A matching armchair or a corner sofa can go on the same email and the same van.

How a footstool and pouffe collection works

  1. Send a photo

Email a picture of the footstool, and of the sofa if that is going too, with a line about where they are. The quote form on this page writes the email.

  2. Get a fixed price

We reply with one price for every item in the photo. If you add a pouffe to the list after the quote, tell us and we update the figure before the day.

  3. Book a slot

Pick a day and we confirm it. Same-day or next-day collection is offered wherever possible, and a morning email gives the best chance of that day.

  4. Pay when it is loaded

The crew carries the footstool and anything else on the list out to the van. You pay the quoted price once the last item is on board.

Why people use us

No item too small

A pouffe on its own gets the same two-person crew, the same fixed price and the same paperwork as a full three piece suite.

Properly licensed

Sofa Removal holds upper tier waste carrier licence CBDU526130 with the Environment Agency, so the footstool is accounted for from your door to its end point.

Insured on the way out

Public liability insurance up to £5 million and employers' liability of £10 million cover the crew while they are in your home.

Reused where it can be

Footstools in good condition with their fire label are passed on. The rest is sorted for recycling, and 90% of what we collect is recycled.

Storage footstools, pouffes and what to do before we arrive

A storage footstool is the one that catches people out. The lid is hinged or lifts off, and if it is not secured it swings open while the footstool is being carried. The crew checks the lid before lifting, holds it shut and carries the footstool level rather than tilted. Pouffes and ordinary footstools are simpler and are carried out in one go, usually on the same trip as the sofa cushions. A big ottoman is treated like a small sofa, with one person at each end and the legs kept clear of the door frame.

Before we arrive, empty a storage footstool completely. Blankets and magazines add more weight than you would expect, and anything left inside goes with it. Take off loose top cushions and have everything you want gone in one room if you can, so the crew can see the full list against the photo and load it in one pass. If the footstool is in a different room to the sofa, just say so in the email.

After collection, a footstool with its permanent fire safety label still on and in decent condition can be passed on for reuse. Everything else goes to a licensed waste transfer station, where the timber base, the foam and the fabric are separated for recycling. Because upholstered items may contain persistent organic pollutants, they are kept separate from general waste and sent for incineration with energy recovery at a permitted facility rather than landfill. A waste transfer note that lists the footstool with the sofa is available on request.

Footstool and pouffe removal questions

Will you collect a footstool on its own?

Yes. Send a photo and we quote for just the footstool. It gets two people and a van like any other job, and we aim for the earliest slot we have.

Does the footstool need to be in the same photo as the sofa?

It helps, because then one picture shows us everything that is going and the price covers all of it. If they are in different rooms, send two photos in one email and say which rooms they are in.

Do I need to empty a storage footstool?

Yes, please. Anything left inside is collected with it and adds weight to the lift. Take out the blankets, toys or magazines and leave the lid closed.

Do you take ottomans and bean bag pouffes?

Yes. Large upholstered ottomans, storage ottomans and bean bag style pouffes are all collected on the same basis as a footstool. A photo tells us the size and we price from that.

Can a footstool be reused rather than recycled?

Sometimes. If it is clean, sound and still has its fire safety label, we try to pass it on for reuse. Without that label it goes to a licensed waste transfer station to be broken down.

Does adding a footstool to a sofa collection cost extra?

Put it in the photo and the price we send back covers it. We quote for everything in the picture as one job, so you see the full figure before you book and nothing is added on the day.
