Sofa disposal is the part most people put off. The sofa is too big for the car, the tip wants it kept apart from everything else, and nobody wants to carry it down the stairs. We do that part for you. Email us a photo of the sofa, say which floor it is on, and we send back one fixed price for carrying it out, loading it and disposing of it. You pay when it is on the van and not before.

This page is for any sofa that does not fit neatly under another heading. A 3 seater, a 2 seater and a corner sofa each have a page of their own, and so do armchairs. If yours is a four seater, a snuggler, a chesterfield, a mismatched set or a sofa so old you are not sure what to call it, send the photo anyway. We quote from the picture, not from a category.

Disposal is the bit you cannot see, so here is what happens to it. Sofa Removal holds upper tier waste carrier licence CBDU526130 and is registered with the Environment Agency. A sofa in good condition with its fire safety label still attached is passed on for reuse where we can. Everything else goes to a licensed waste transfer station to be broken down, with the metal, timber, foam and fabric sorted out. Ask and we will tell you where yours went, and email a waste transfer note for your records.

Two people come in a van and carry the sofa out from wherever it sits, including upstairs rooms, flats and tight hallways. You do not need to get it to the kerb or even to the front door. We collect same day or next day wherever possible, and an email first thing in the morning gives you the best chance of a slot that day. If you are still weighing up the options, our guide on how to get rid of a sofa compares them.

How a sofa disposal collection works

  1. Send a photo

Email a picture of the sofa to hello@sofa-removal.co.uk, or put it through the quote form on this page. Add which floor it is on and anything odd about the route out.

  2. Get a fixed price

We look at the photo and reply with one figure that covers carrying, loading and disposal. That figure does not change when the crew arrives and sees the sofa.

  3. Book a slot

Reply with a day that suits you. We collect same day or next day wherever possible, and emailing early in the morning gives you the best chance of that day.

  4. Pay once it is loaded

Two people carry the sofa out of the room and onto the van. You pay the quoted price at that point, and we can email a waste transfer note afterwards if you want one.

Disposing of a sofa the legal way

In the UK, fly-tipping is a criminal offence, and if someone you paid dumps your sofa in a lane you can be held responsible for it. Householders have a duty of care to see that their waste is handled properly, which in practice means using a licensed waste carrier and asking for the licence number before the sofa leaves. Ours is CBDU526130 and you can check it with the Environment Agency.

Upholstered sofas have been treated to meet fire safety rules, and the permanent label sewn to the underside is what proves it. A sofa that still has that label and is clean and sound can be passed on for reuse, so leave the label alone. Sofas that cannot be reused go to a licensed waste transfer station. Soft furnishings can contain persistent organic pollutants, so they are kept separate from general waste and are not landfilled, and the foam and fabric go for incineration with energy recovery at a permitted facility.

There is nothing you have to do before the crew arrives. If you want to make it quicker, clear anything breakable from the hallway and check down the sides of the cushions for coins, keys and remotes. Then open the door when we knock, and that is your part done.

Sofa disposal and collection questions

Can you dispose of a sofa that is broken, stained or damaged by pets?

Yes. The condition of the sofa does not stop us collecting it, it only decides whether it is reused or broken down for recycling. Put the damage in the photo so the price is right first time.

How do I know my sofa will be disposed of legally?

Ask any collector for a waste carrier licence number and check it against the Environment Agency register before you book. Our upper tier licence is CBDU526130. We will also tell you where the sofa went and send a waste transfer note on request.

Will my old sofa end up in landfill?

No. Upholstered seating can contain persistent organic pollutants, so it must not be landfilled. If the sofa cannot be reused it is broken down at a licensed waste transfer station, with the metal and timber recycled and the foam and fabric sent for incineration with energy recovery.

Can you dispose of two sofas in the same visit?

Yes. Put both sofas in the photo, or send two photos in the same email, and we price the visit as one job. The same goes for armchairs, footstools and anything else from the suite.

Does the sofa have to be outside when you arrive?

No. We carry it out from the room it is in, upstairs or down, and load it straight onto the van. Leaving it outside is not necessary and in a flat it is usually not allowed.

How quickly can you collect a sofa for disposal?

Same day or next day wherever possible. Send the photo early in the morning and we will tell you the earliest slot we have. If you need a particular day, say so in the email.

Send a photo and we will tell you the price

Email a picture of the sofa to hello@sofa-removal.co.uk or use the form above. One fixed price, two people, and the paperwork to show where it went.
